ANPR and Number Plate Recognition
Number Plate Recognition (NPR) and ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) systems are transforming the way commercial, strata and industrial sites manage vehicle access and security.
Eco Traffic Solutions provides advanced number plate recognition systems designed to automate vehicle entry, improve traffic flow and enhance site security through intelligent access control integration. Our ANPR solutions can seamlessly integrate with boom gates, parking systems and remote access technologies to deliver fast, reliable and efficient vehicle management.
From commercial buildings and warehouse facilities to strata complexes and secure industrial sites, our tailored vehicle access control solutions help reduce manual intervention while improving operational efficiency and security.
With over 20 years of industry experience, Eco Traffic Solutions delivers reliable ANPR and number plate recognition systems across Sydney and NSW, backed by professional support and proven industry expertise.
How the system works
The process begins with a specialized camera that takes a picture or a video stream of a vehicle. These cameras often use infrared illumination to capture high-quality images regardless of lighting conditions, day or night.
This is a critical step where the system’s software analyses the image to find the rectangular area of the number plate. The algorithms look for specific features like the plate’s shape, colour, and texture to distinguish it from the rest of the vehicle and the background.
Once the plate is located, the software isolates each individual character (letters and numbers) from the plate. This step is essential because it breaks down the complex image of the entire plate into smaller, more manageable images of single characters.
This is the heart of the system. The isolated characters are “read” and converted into a digital text string by the OCR engine. The OCR software compares the image of each character to a database of known characters to find a match. Modern systems use machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve accuracy, allowing them to read plates that are dirty, damaged, or slightly skewed.
Finally, the recognized number plate data is used for a variety of purposes. This could be checking it against a database to grant or deny access to a parking garage, looking for a stolen vehicle, or logging the vehicle’s passage for toll collection. The system’s purpose determines what happens to the data after it’s been recognized.
The main components: a camera, a frame grabber, a computer, and the software.
This is the primary sensor that captures the image of the vehicle’s number plate. The camera can be a standard CCTV camera, an infrared (IR) camera, or a specialized high-speed camera.
The type of camera used depends on the application, with IR cameras being particularly effective for capturing images in low-light conditions or at night by illuminating the number plate with an IR light source. .
The camera’s placement is crucial; it must be positioned at an optimal angle and height to capture clear, undistorted images of the number plate.
The frame grabber is a hardware component that acts as an interface between the camera and the computer. Its main function is to convert the analogue video signal from the camera into a digital image that can be processed by the computer.
In modern systems, the frame grabber’s functionality is often integrated into the camera itself, especially with IP cameras, which send a digital stream directly to the computer.
The computer is the processing unit of the system. It receives the digital images from the camera (via the frame grabber) and runs the specialized software to perform the recognition tasks.
The computer needs to have sufficient processing power to handle the high-speed image processing and analysis required for real-time recognition.
This is the core of the NPR system. The software uses a series of algorithms to process the images and extract the number plate information. The general steps performed by the software are:
