Number Plate Recognition

In today’s urban environments, effective traffic management is no longer just about controlling congestion; it’s about creating smarter, safer, and more sustainable communities.

From local councils and large-scale developers to commercial businesses and event organizers, every client faces a unique set of challenges.

Eco Traffic Solutions is uniquely positioned to address these modern challenges. We provide a comprehensive, turn-key system designed to meet your specific operational needs with a commitment to ecological principles.

Our integrated approach goes beyond basic access control, offering advanced solutions that not only enhance security and efficiency but also contribute to the global shift toward responsible resource management and emission reduction.

By leveraging our innovative and reliable products, we empower you to achieve a system that is not only highly functional but also aligned with a vision for a greener, more sustainable future.

How the system works

  1. Image Acquisition

The process begins with a specialized camera that takes a picture or a video stream of a vehicle. These cameras often use infrared illumination to capture high-quality images regardless of lighting conditions, day or night.

  1. Plate Localization

This is a critical step where the system’s software analyses the image to find the rectangular area of the number plate. The algorithms look for specific features like the plate’s shape, colour, and texture to distinguish it from the rest of the vehicle and the background.

  1. Character Segmentation

Once the plate is located, the software isolates each individual character (letters and numbers) from the plate. This step is essential because it breaks down the complex image of the entire plate into smaller, more manageable images of single characters.

  1. Optical Character Recognition (OCR)

This is the heart of the system. The isolated characters are “read” and converted into a digital text string by the OCR engine. The OCR software compares the image of each character to a database of known characters to find a match. Modern systems use machine learning and artificial intelligence to improve accuracy, allowing them to read plates that are dirty, damaged, or slightly skewed.

  1. Data Analysis

Finally, the recognized number plate data is used for a variety of purposes. This could be checking it against a database to grant or deny access to a parking garage, looking for a stolen vehicle, or logging the vehicle’s passage for toll collection. The system’s purpose determines what happens to the data after it’s been recognized.

The main components: a camera, a frame grabber, a computer, and the software.

  1. Camera ?

This is the primary sensor that captures the image of the vehicle’s number plate. The camera can be a standard CCTV camera, an infrared (IR) camera, or a specialized high-speed camera.

The type of camera used depends on the application, with IR cameras being particularly effective for capturing images in low-light conditions or at night by illuminating the number plate with an IR light source. .

The camera’s placement is crucial; it must be positioned at an optimal angle and height to capture clear, undistorted images of the number plate.

  1. Frame Grabber

The frame grabber is a hardware component that acts as an interface between the camera and the computer. Its main function is to convert the analogue video signal from the camera into a digital image that can be processed by the computer.

In modern systems, the frame grabber’s functionality is often integrated into the camera itself, especially with IP cameras, which send a digital stream directly to the computer.

  1. Computer

The computer is the processing unit of the system. It receives the digital images from the camera (via the frame grabber) and runs the specialized software to perform the recognition tasks.

The computer needs to have sufficient processing power to handle the high-speed image processing and analysis required for real-time recognition.

  1. Software ?

This is the core of the NPR system. The software uses a series of algorithms to process the images and extract the number plate information. The general steps performed by the software are:

  • Image acquisition: The software receives the captured image from the camera.
  • Plate localization: The software analyses the image to find the rectangular area containing the number plate. This is done by looking for specific characteristics like contrasting colours, edges, and texture.
  • Character segmentation: Once the plate is located, the software isolates each individual character (letters and numbers) on the plate.
  • Optical Character Recognition (OCR): This is the most critical step. The software uses OCR algorithms to “read” the segmented characters and convert them into machine-readable text. . The OCR engine is trained on different fonts and character styles to accurately recognize them.
  • Analysis and action: The recognized text is then analysed and compared against a database. Based on the application, the system can perform various actions, such as logging the plate number, checking it against a ‘hot list’ of wanted vehicles, or controlling a gate for access control.

The service and support provided by Eco Traffic Solutions to us during the recent power outages in Sydney was exemplary - as always.

However, in our experience it was typical of the organisation.

Well done - and thank you so much. Much appreciated as you well know.
